The flood is a natural calamity. Nowadays it has become a very common matter in Bangladesh. In remote past it was thought that the flood was God's wrath upon the people of the affected area. With the growth of scientific knowledge man proved this idea to be false and has discovered the real cause of the flood. has Year after year the depth of rivers are lessened by silt. As a result, rivers cannot hold the water. It overflows their banks and causes floods. Floods are caused by some other reasons. Sometimes heavy rush of water from mountains overflows our rivers. Bangladesh is a low land. It has many rivers. She is also in the monsoon area. It rains heavily during the monsoon period So almost every year the flood visits our country. In 1988, 1998 and in 2004 three devastating floods occurred in our country. 

They caused a heavy damage to our country But the flood of 1998 broke the records of the past. It was more devastating than all other floods of the past. Never before did water level rise so high nor was the duration so long. The whole country went under water.

Even most of the area of Dhaka city went under deep water. Boats became the only transport of the water people of the affected area. Bus lines were damaged. Flood water entered the ponds of the houses. As a result, people hat to face an untold suffering for want of pure drinking water. It reminded us of the famous line of S. T. Coleridge. "There was everywhere around them but not a drop to drink." This devastating flood took life of so many people.

After effects of floods are more serious. The flood causes famine and various diseases like cholera, typhoid and dysentery break out in an epidemic form. 

During and after the flood the relief work should go on. Floods do a little good to man.

The miseries of those who survive know no bounds. The flood causes famine. Many dangerous diseases like want of food. The prices of daily necessaries go up very high. cholera, dysentery, typhoid, etc break out. Many people die because Floods do little good to man. The flood water carries silt which makes our land fertile. Floods also carry away waste materials and make our environment clean.

Relief work is most essential in the affected area. So, during the flood and after the flood the relief work should go on. Otherwise, the miseries of the victims will increase. In both times government, non-government, and voluntary organizations should come forward to help the flood-affected people. It is very urgent to take proper steps to control floods.
