Polybags were used as shopping bags throughout the country until it was banned in 2002. They became popular because of their light weight and price. They were so light that it was very easy to carry them and in comparison with other bags found in the market, they were cheap. But the harm they did to our environment was beyond description Polybags are made of polythene which is not capable of being decomposed naturally.

Polythene can last in the soil for many years doing a lot of harm to the soil. It destroys the fertility of the soil. It is very harmful in the city. Before it had been banned average of 55 lack pieces of polybags were being used every day in Dhaka City alone. Most of this huge quantity was used and then thrown out. These polythene bags found their way into the drains. Then the polybags block sewerage pipes and the regular flow of drain water.

Thinking of the bad effects and harm of polythene bags, the government banned them in 2002. Conscious people supported it and cooperated with the government.

However, everyone needs cooperation to stop the use of polythene bags. Some unconscious people are trying to Introduce its use again. Strict lawful steps should be taken to execute the government's decision. Besides polybags, we must be conscious of other polythene and plastic items like bottles, pots, cans, thick polythene bags, etc. The use of these things is being increased awfully.

One of the major problems with polybags is that they are extremely harmful to the environment. Since these bags are made of non-biodegradable materials, it takes hundreds of years for them to decompose. Thus, they accumulate in landfills, water bodies, and natural habitats, causing severe pollution. When burned, polybags emit toxic gases that add to air pollution and global warming, further aggravating climate change.

Polybag litter largely endangers the wild fauna. Often, animals mistake these plastic bags for food, which, after consumption, leads to severe complications in their health, even death. When polybags are in aquatic environments, they ensure the death of turtles, fish, and other marine birds by clogging their digestive tracts or suffocation.

Another problem caused by polybags is the clogging of drainage systems. Polybags that are not disposed of properly block the flow of water in drains and sewers, leading to waterlogging and flooding during heavy rains. This does not only disrupt life but also results in breeding sites for diseases like malaria and dengue.

Polybags are associated with a lot of health hazards. The harmful chemicals in their manufacture can leach into food or beverages packed in them, causing ailments. Further, the pollution resulting from inappropriate disposal methods can contaminate the soil and water, affecting agriculture and drinking water supplies.

Ways to reduce problems with polybags include their eco-friendly alternatives of cloth bags or jute bags and packaging, which are biodegradable. Communities and governments must join in strictly regulating polybag production and use and spreading awareness of the hazardous effects it has brought about. Recycling and proper mechanisms for its disposal must be considered to reduce further potential damage to the environment.

Thus, polybags are easy to handle and carry, but they cost our environment, wildlife, and health more dearly. It is our duty and responsibility to reduce their usage, switching over to some viable alternatives promising a cleaner, healthier future.

Polybags are one of the most available and cheapest tools in every household globally due to their ease of usage. However, their excessive utilization has given rise to environmental, health, and social issues that cannot be kept under the rug.

One of the biggest drawbacks of polybags is that they are non-biodegradable. Unlike organic materials, they do not break down into nature and remain in the environment for hundreds of years. These further pollute landfills, rivers, and oceans, which adversely affect the beauty of nature and the health of ecosystems. Animals mistake polybags for food. Cows, birds, and sea animals like turtles eat the bags, which causes choking, blockage in their stomachs, and ultimately death. In oceans, plastic bags float for miles, entangling and killing marine life.

Incorrect disposal of polybags blocks drainage courses, causing deluges in cities during rain. This interferes with everyday living and, of course, is an invitation to several cases of malaria, dengue, and even plague due to mosquitoes that breed in the stagnant pools of water. Polybags can also affect human health. If polybags are used to store hot or acidic food, the harmful chemicals from the plastic leak into the food and can cause long-term health problems. In addition, toxic fumes from burning polybags add to respiratory problems.

To tackle these problems, individuals and governments must take collective action. Alternatives like cloth bags, paper bags, and biodegradable materials should replace polybags. Laws banning or limiting the use of polybags can encourage people to switch to sustainable options. Awareness campaigns can educate people about the dangers of plastic pollution. While these polybags may be helpful, the negative impacts that they create far outweigh their usefulness. By reducing their use and opting for eco-friendly alternatives, we can protect our planet and ensure a healthier future for all.

Conclusion

Though polybags are convenient and cheap, they provide a serious threat to the environment, wildlife, and also our health. Being non-biodegradable in nature, they cause long-term pollution. Improper disposal methods block drainage pathways and lead to the death of animals. Further toxic effects due to burning and leaching of chemicals bring forth more dangers they give rise to for human health.

It goes without saying that their replacement with cloth bags, paper bags, and biodegradable ones has become very necessary in such a situation. Awareness and strict regulation in respect of their use will also help a great deal in dissuading their usage. We can work together to lessen the ills of the polybags and move towards a healthy, sustainable planet.
